Description
E.M. Forster's first novel explores the effect of Italian culture and atmosphere on insular, provincial British personalities. Lilia Herriton, a 33-year-old widow, is urged to spend a year in Italy by her brother-in-law, Philip. Lilia departs and all goes well until news reaches the Herritons that she intends to marry again. Mrs. Herriton, a domineering social snob, sends Philip to prevent the catastrophe; but he arrives to discover that Lilia has already married Gino Carelli, the carefree, irresponsible 21-year-old son of a dentist. The marriage fails, and after Lilia dies in childbirth, her Herriton relatives decide that they must bring her infant son back to England to be properly brought up. Gino, however, refuses to relinquish his son; the sum of money that they offer as a bribe is of no avail; and then Harriet, Lilia's grimly conventional, self-righteous sister-in-law, imposes her will and abducts the baby.
